MHC Intern

Kobe Lyons, he/him, is a clinical mental health counseling intern located at the UC CAPS Calhoun location. He is currently attending Northern Kentucky University pursuing his M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He is working toward his licensure in Kentucky but has interest in a variety of locations.

Kobe appreciates each individual perspective of clients as a wholly unique and worthwhile experience. He has strong clinical interests in existential problems, meaning-making, depression, and self-exploration. His approach to therapy entails using a humanistic and existential scope for inward exploration of a client’s strengths and values based upon their lived experience and how they make meaning of the world. Kobe’s main purpose in counseling is to create a space where anything can be shared without judgement.

My favorite movie about mental health and why?
Kobe’s favorite movie about mental health is a movie titled ‘Mary and Max’. Mary and Max is a stop-motion animated film with the general premise of a poor Australian girl becoming pen pals with an autistic man residing within New York. This specific movie spoke to him because of its very realistic portrayal of a person living with autism while simultaneously showcasing the struggles of being from a low socioeconomic status as a child.

Coping skills I recommend to clients that I actually use myself: Kobe is a proponent of mindfulness based meditative practices and breathing exercises. Activities that ground onself are an extremely important tool to use in situations where one feels stressed or overwhelmed.

My favorite thing about working at CAPS: Kobe values the unique, culturally-informed perspectives offered by not only his fellow clinicians, but also by his client base.
