My UHP experience in five words

Innovative, Unique, Rewarding, Immersive, Transformational

Why UHP is for me

When I say that I came to UC mainly because of UHP, I really mean it. UHP has so many perks and such a unique outlook to developing a global citizen scholar that it was one of the things I was most looking forward to. UHP allows me to take a break from my rigorous academic schedule to help me create the college experience I always wanted. I can hone in on my passions such as photography and learn applicable skills in my chosen field all while getting a chance to travel, meet new people, and diversify my resume. UHP aims to help you stand out from the rest by giving you a holistic background so that you are better suited for any of your future endeavors, whether they be in your chosen field or outside of it!

If I could go back in time and give myself one piece of advice, it would be

My advice would be: “Don’t be afraid to try new things even if they’re outside your major or comfort zone, in fact chase such experiences. Some of the most meaningful learnings and unexpected passions come from just saying yes.”

The honors experience that made the biggest impact on me

My experience in the Biomedical Research and Mentoring program was extremely enriching, so much so that I continue to work with the lab that I matched with! I’ve realized how much more there is to uncover in the biomedical field. Research isn't just about the scientific discoveries, it is also about how to think, problem-solve, and persevere. My time with the Fernandez lab involved looking into the impact of aberrant light conditions on the brain, retina, and behavior of mice. I have learned so many technical skills while also honing in on my patience, organization, and critical thinking skills. I feel so much more connected to the lab’s mission, and my interactions with its members allowed me to feel more involved in this community of scientists working toward understanding how something as simple as light can deeply affect health.

What I'm most looking forward to this year

I’m most excited to dive deeper into the experiences I’ve already begun exploring. Being a Next Innovation Scholar has opened up so many unexpected opportunities to learn, grow, and challenge myself in new ways. This year is all about leadership, and I’m eager to strengthen the skills these roles will help me develop. I’m also looking forward to meaningful time with new friends and making even more memories with the old ones.
