Understanding the FAFSA priority deadline for 2025

How to stay on track and maximize your financial aid

Paying for college might feel like a big puzzle, but it gets a lot easier when you understand what to do and when to do it.

Whether you're planning to become a Bearcat at the University of Cincinnati or you're still narrowing down your college list, one of the most important steps you can take to make school more affordable is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

FAFSA unlocks access to grants, scholarships, federal loans, and work-study opportunities, but here’s the catch: when you submit matters just as much as what you submit. To give yourself the best shot at the most aid possible, you'll want to keep a close eye on the FAFSA priority deadline.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about priority vs. final deadlines, what types of aid FAFSA covers, and how to make sure you don’t miss out on valuable funding opportunities, especially those tied to the University of Cincinnati’s timeline.

FAFSA fast facts

  • FAFSA opens: Typically in December (for 2024–25, it opened Dec. 31, 2023; this may continue for 2025–26)
  • Recommended filing window: As early as possible after FAFSA opens, ideally by Feb. 1
  • UC priority deadline: Feb. 1
  • Ohio state grant deadline: Oct. 1 (This is for state aid, not the university deadline)

What is the FAFSA priority deadline?

The FAFSA priority deadline is the date by which you should submit your FAFSA form to be considered for maximum financial aid.

While the federal government sets a final FAFSA deadline, individual states and colleges, like the University of Cincinnati, set earlier “priority” deadlines to determine eligibility for certain aid programs.

In other words, the earlier you apply, the more aid you may be eligible for.

What does the FAFSA actually cover?

Filing the FAFSA opens the door to a wide range of financial aid opportunities. Here are the main types of aid you might receive:

At UC, you can also reduce costs through paid co-op experiences, which provide real-world job training while you earn money.

Your eligibility is based on the information you provide in your FAFSA form, which is why completing it accurately and on time is so important.

Why meeting the FAFSA priority deadline matters

Missing the priority deadline doesn’t mean you’re out of luck, but it does limit your options.

You can still submit your FAFSA after Feb. 1 and be considered for federal aid like Pell Grants and Direct Loans, but you might miss out on some important funding, including:

  • Institutional scholarships and need-based grants

  • Federal work-study opportunities

  • State-based grants like the Ohio College Opportunity Grant

  • Timely financial aid offers that help you plan ahead

Because many aid programs are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, applying early (application received by Nov.1) gives you the best shot at every dollar available. So if you do miss the deadline, don’t panic, just file as soon as possible and stay on top of your financial aid status.

FAFSA priority deadline 2025 for UC Students

To receive the most financial aid, UC strongly recommends submitting your FAFSA between Oct. 1 and Nov. 1. This early application window gives you priority consideration for limited funding sources.

The final FAFSA priority deadline for UC is Feb. 1, 2025, for the 2025–26 academic year.

Pro tip: Merit scholarship notifications for eligible students will begin in December and financial aid offers are expected to begin in March giving you time to plan ahead.
