Bed Adjustments
Depending on assignment loction, students may have a few options for requesting changes to their room's bed set-up. Generally, there are two options for adjustments:
- Bunking or unbunking
- Changes to bed height (sometimes referred to as "lofting")
For more information about what is available in your assigned community, please see below.
For fall semester 2025, the Bed Set-up Request Form will be available in the housing portal beginning July 21 and will close at 5 p.m., July 25.
The form will reopen after fall move-in for any students who would like to request an adjustment but miss the July window.
Bed Adjustments Overview
Requests for changes to bed set-up are generally offered for one week during the summer following assignments, and after move-in for a limited time. Adjustments are available free of charge and while supplies last, in communities where offered, and in some cases only if students have made the necessary room readiness preparations.
Due to safety considerations, university policy prohibits residents from making their own bed adjustments. Residents may not change their bed heights, loft, unloft, bunk, or un-bunk their own beds. Attempting to do so may result in injury and charges for any damage to the room or furniture.
Please note that services are not performed in the order they are received. They are performed as batches based on location and logistics. Our team will work diligently to complete all requests, whether made before or after move-in, as quickly as possible. Some bed set-ups require extra parts from the University's inventory; requests are accommodated as supplies last. Thank you for your understanding.
How to Request
If your community offers an adjustment service, submit your request at the “Bed Set-Up” step of the Application in the Housing Portal, or find it under the Forms menu.
Please note, there may be some cases where you are unable to submit a request for which you believe you are eligible.
- If you believe you are eligible to submit a request based on the information below, please contact your Neighborhood Operations Coordinator (NOC) through your community’s Service Center.
- If your request is related to an accommodation, please begin your conversation with Accessibility Resources (AR) and follow their instructions.
We will communicate with you about your request via your UC email or notes left at your room. Please note that for post-arrival adjustments, it is your responsibility to clear the bed and surrounding area of your belongings. Our teams may be unable to make adjustments to beds in rooms that do not have the area cleared.
Please remember, it is your responsibility to obtain agreement with your roommate(s) for changes that may impact them. If you submit a pre-arrival adjustment request, you should encourage your roommate to submit one as well.
Bed Heights
The following are the available options for height adjustments:
- Low Height: Bottom of the frame is approximately 12” from the floor. Comparable to a typical bed at home.
- Medium Height: Bottom of the frame is approximately 36” from the floor. Provides room for additional under-bed storage, including some University-provided dressers in some rooms in some communities.
- High Height: Bottom of the frame is approximately 64” from the floor. Provides room for other furniture beneath the bed, such as dressers and desks. A powerful solution when un-bunking. No side rails or ladders are provided. A stabilizer bar is added.
- Bunked Beds: Two beds stacked. Approximately the same as a High Height over a Low Height. Most efficient use of floor space. No side rails or ladders are provided.

Unbunking Considerations
Because unbunking presents unique challenges in traditional-styled spaces, students should consider the following factors and discuss them with their roommate(s) before submitting a request for beds to be unbunked:
- Requests for unbunking will impact all students in a space.
- The floorspace occupied by two unbunked beds may make movement around your room difficult. Our design team opted for bunked beds as the default to maximize students' use of the space.
- Other furniture and items within your room will likely need rearranged and you may have limited feasible options.
