Credit for Prior Learning Policy
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) at the University of Cincinnati (UC) is a method for providing credit for learning that has occurred outside of the traditional college class setting. This process includes testing, certifications, military and other training, work experience, and other work competencies. CPL enables students to supplement their educational experience through previously-completed work to avoid duplication of educational work and expedite the process towards degree completion. CPL allows UC to honor the prior learning that students bring to the institution via applying credits toward degree completion.
Eligibility
Any degree-seeking UC student may apply for CPL. However, students in JD, MD, and PharmD programs are not eligible for CPL under this policy.
CPL credits do not count toward academic residency (see Academic Residency Policy - About UC | University of Cincinnati for Policy on Academic Residency). There is no limit to the number of CPL credits that can be earned; however, students must meet the academic residency requirements for their degree program.
Program faculty determine which CPL credits will be applied to the student’s degree.
CPL credits awarded by other accredited institutions will be automatically applied to a student’s record; however, program faculty shall determine if any of the credits are applicable to the degree requirements.
Students may submit the same experience or professional credential for review toward multiple degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate career (i.e., double counting – one portfolio application per academic career level). These credits must be evaluated separately to be applied to each program.
CPL credit can be awarded as a specific course or as an elective block credit. Each program will have the responsibility of deciding how CPL credit will be received/awarded. The unit providing instruction will lead the portfolio review process and will be charged with coordinating with other colleges, if necessary.
Validation Methods
The following methods may be used to apply for CPL.
Examination
CPL may be awarded via the student passing an examination covering course content (i.e., the equivalent of a final examination). Programs shall determine the passing score required to apply CPL, as well as policies surrounding the administration and grading of the examination.
Portfolio
CPL may be awarded via a portfolio detailing the student’s prior experience and competencies. Programs shall determine the requirements and evaluation procedures for portfolios.
Credential
CPL may be awarded via submission of previously-earned professional credentials or certifications (e.g., Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Licensed Practical Nurse, Civil Engineering Certification). Programs shall determine if and how credentials may be applied to the degree.
Military Service
CPL may be awarded for military training and experience in the U.S. Armed Forces or National Guard. Please refer to Military Transfer Assurance Guides (MTAGs) - About UC | University of Cincinnati.
CLEP & Other Test Credits
CPL may be awarded via CLEP (College Level Examination Program), DSST (DANTES Subject Standardized Tests), and other tests. Please refer to Test Credits - About UC | University of Cincinnati.
Technical Credit
CPL may be awarded for either CTAG or OTC Degree Pathways - hours earned toward a trade that can be converted to coursework accepted toward either an Associate of Technical Studies or Associate of Applied Science or Business. Please refer to OTC Degree Pathways | Ohio Technical Center website.
Credits Earned at Other Accredited Institutions
CPL awarded by other accredited universities will be automatically applied to the student’s record. Programs shall determine if and how these credits may be applied to the degree.
Procedure
Once CPL has been assessed via one of the approved methods listed above, program faculty will submit a form using the Advanced Standing process. Please refer to Advanced Standing - About UC | University of Cincinnati.
